Sony may back away from PC releases of single-player exclusives

Bloomberg journalist Jason Schreier suggests Sony is shifting strategy to keep traditional single-player first-party games exclusive to PlayStation consoles. Live service titles would still launch on PC, but upcoming releases like Marvel's Wolverine appear headed for console-only debuts. This marks a potential reversal from recent years when hits like God of War reached PC platforms.

Over the past few years, Sony Interactive Entertainment has ported several PlayStation exclusives to PC, including franchises such as The Last of Us, Marvel's Spider-Man, Horizon, and God of War. However, Bloomberg journalist Jason Schreier indicated on the latest episode of the Triple Click podcast that this approach may be changing for first-party single-player titles.

Schreier stated, "I think for them, their strategy is like, live service games are coming to PC. But I think the sense I'm getting is that they're backing away from putting their exclusive console stuff like traditional single-player stuff on PC." He highlighted the upcoming Marvel's Wolverine, scheduled for launch on September 15, 2026, exclusively on PlayStation 5 with no PC version announced. "I wouldn't be surprised if it never came to PC," Schreier added, noting that players would need a PlayStation for the indefinite future.

This potential shift extends to other projects, with Schreier suggesting titles like Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet and future God of War games could remain console exclusives. For Ghost of Yotei, no PC release has been announced. Schreier downplayed the financial impact, saying, "I don't think it was that successful in the first place. So I don't know. It doesn't seem like it's going to be that big of a blow."

Recent announcements, such as Death Stranding 2: On the Beach coming to PC, involve third-party publications rather than internal PlayStation Studios. Meanwhile, reports note that PC ports represent less than 2% of Sony's yearly revenue, and rumors suggest some first-party ports have been canceled. Separately, Xbox leadership under new CEO Asha Sharma has hinted at reevaluating multiplatform strategies, though no firm decisions have been made.

Sony halts PC ports for first-party single-player PlayStation games

Sony Interactive Entertainment has abandoned plans to release current and future first-party single-player PlayStation games on PC, according to a Bloomberg report. Titles including last year's Ghost of Yotei and the upcoming Saros—a Returnal successor set for April 30—will stay exclusive to PS5, while multiplayer games like Marathon (launching tomorrow on PS5 and PC) and Marvel Tokon continue multi-platform. This reverses six years of ports since Horizon Zero Dawn.

Industry insiders indicate that Sony is reducing PC releases for its single-player PS5 games, potentially leaving titles like Wolverine exclusive to consoles. This strategic pivot, decided last year, prioritizes the PlayStation ecosystem over broader platform support. The move follows mixed results from previous PC ports.

Xbox Game Studios head Craig Duncan has announced plans for more consistent releases of its games on PlayStation 5, addressing past irregularities in launch timings. The upcoming Fable reboot will launch simultaneously on Xbox Series X|S, PC, and PS5, while Forza Horizon 6 will arrive on Sony's console later. This shift aims to broaden the audience for Xbox titles amid financial pressures.

Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, a top-rated PS5 exclusive from 2025, will arrive on PC on March 19, 2026. The move follows the pattern of its predecessor, which transitioned from PlayStation to PC a year after release. This development ends the game's console exclusivity for PC players, though no Xbox plans have been announced.

A new report details Microsoft's strategy for major 2026 game launches, including summer and fall windows for Halo, Fable, and Gears of War titles. The company aims to steer clear of Grand Theft Auto 6's November release. Separate leaks suggest an imminent PlayStation 5 port for Starfield.

Insomniac Games has indicated that more news on its upcoming Wolverine game will come in spring 2026, making an appearance at the February 12 PlayStation State of Play unlikely. The event, announced by Sony, will run for over 60 minutes and feature news, gameplay updates, and announcements. Wolverine was first teased in 2021 during a PlayStation Showcase.

Publishers have cancelled Xbox Series X|S versions of two upcoming games, citing resource allocation and a shifting console market. 1348 Ex Voto and Nickelodeon Splat Pack will now launch only on PC, PlayStation 5, and Nintendo Switch. This move reflects broader challenges for Xbox, including sharp sales drops and a lack of exclusive titles.
