DPR denies Jokowi's statement on discussing laws without presidential letter

Deputy Speaker of DPR RI Cucun Ahmad Syamsurijal has denied President Joko Widodo's claim that he did not sign the revision of the KPK Law. Cucun emphasized that the DPR cannot discuss laws without a presidential letter. This comes in response to Jokowi's agreement to return the KPK Law to its original version.

Jakarta, VIVA – Deputy Speaker of the DPR RI Cucun Ahmad Syamsurijal has stated that the DPR cannot process law revisions without a presidential letter or surpres. This statement aims to refute President Joko Widodo's (Jokowi) claim that he did not sign the revision of the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) Law.

"The public is smart; he is the president, how could the DPR discuss a law without a surpres (Presidential Letter)," said Cucun at the Parliamentary Complex in Senayan, Jakarta, on Wednesday, February 18, 2026.

Cucun added that all laws processed in the DPR must go through a presidential letter. "The public is smart now; it's impossible for a law to proceed without a letter from the president," he explained.

Previously, on Friday, February 13, 2026, Jokowi agreed with former KPK Chairman Abraham Samad's proposal to revert the KPK Law to its original version. "Yes, I agree, it's good (to return the KPK Law to the old version), because that revision was a DPR initiative, you know. Don't get it wrong, it was a DPR initiative," said Jokowi.

Jokowi explained that the revision was carried out on the DPR's initiative during his presidency, but he did not sign it. "Yes, indeed (KPK Law revision). At that time, it was revised on the DPR's initiative, but I did not sign it," he stated.

Meanwhile, State Secretary Minister Prasetyo Hadi said the government has no plans to revert the KPK Law to its old version. "Not yet. We haven't discussed it," said Prasetyo. He also confirmed there was no discussion on the KPK Law during Prabowo's meeting with Abraham Samad. "No (discussion during the meeting with Abraham). There was no discussion about it at all," he said. The government also has no intention of discussing it.
