Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba has renewed warnings to school principals against imposing unauthorised levies on parents. He spoke during an Education Day event in Nyeri County on July 18. The Ministry of Education will continue taking disciplinary action where violations occur.
Ogamba addressed the issue at Mbiriri Comprehensive School. He stated that any new charges require full approval, parental acceptance and ministry clearance. Several principals have already faced action for breaching the rules.
The Cabinet Secretary also called for stronger dialogue between schools and learners. This forms part of efforts to address recent student unrest, including violence at Nyabisase Mixed Secondary School in Kisii County. He said the law would apply fully while root causes are examined.
Board chairperson Purity Ngina highlighted benefits of the Competency-Based Education curriculum during the same event. She noted it allows students to demonstrate practical skills beyond examinations. The Ministry maintains that approved fees and better engagement will improve the school environment.
