Godsticks release music video for new single M.I.A.

UK progressive rock/metal band Godsticks have unveiled their new single M.I.A., accompanied by a music video. The track serves as the lead from their upcoming seventh album VOiD, set for release in March via Kscope. Frontman Darran Charles describes the song as inspired by his inner critic.

Godsticks, a UK-based progressive rock/metal outfit, have released M.I.A. as the first single from their seventh studio album, VOiD. The band characterizes the album as their darkest and most uncompromising work to date. The single arrives with a new music video produced by Martin Holmes.

In explaining the track's concept, frontman and songwriter Darran Charles shares his fascination with the 'inner critic' or 'inner monologue.' He states, “although I’ve no experience in the field of psychology I’ve always been fascinated (and indeed tortured) by that voice in your head that goes under various guises such as ‘inner critic’ or ‘inner monologue’. Mine is a mouthy bastard that has an opinion on practically everything and never fails to offer it – incessantly. No amount of internal vitriol directed at it seems to quieten its destructively negative offerings. It never sleeps either – I could wake up at 4am to use the bathroom and to my surprise and determent, it reminds me that it’s been up all night searching through the archives to remind me of some embarrassment I felt 25 years ago.”

Charles further elaborates on imagining this voice in physical form, allowing confrontation with its criticisms about his musicianship and life choices. He notes that the song's guitar and drum parts were challenging, leading the band to question their abilities, but they ultimately prevailed.

VOiD is scheduled for release on March 27 via Kscope, with pre-orders available now.
