House Republicans approved more than $1.1 trillion for the Pentagon on Wednesday along with a separate $95 billion budget framework that includes over $70 billion for the war with Iran.
The National Defense Authorization Act passed by a 216 to 212 vote, with six Democrats joining Republicans. It now moves to the Senate, where its path remains uncertain after Democrats blocked an earlier version last week.
Speaker Mike Johnson said the measure represents a generational investment in national defense. Democrats criticized the bill for pairing military needs with cuts to domestic programs and tax reductions, with Rep. Adam Smith calling the approach unsustainable.
Separately, the House advanced the $95 billion reconciliation blueprint by a 216 to 214 margin. The framework also allocates $12 billion for farmers and funds provisions of the SAVE America Act.
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth testified Tuesday that the war has already cost $37.5 billion, with 18 U.S. service members killed and nearly 500 injured. He warned that without additional funding, troop pay and readiness could face shortfalls.
