Ruto sets April 2027 deadline for Thwake Dam completion

President William Ruto has directed that the Thwake Dam project be completed by April 2027. The announcement came during a church service in Kitui on July 12.

President William Ruto spoke at St. Martin's Cathedral in Kitui. He said the government had approved KSh10.6 billion last month to finish the project.

Ruto noted that the dam was originally due by December 2026. Funding shortfalls had caused delays since the project started in 2018.

The over KSh82 billion dam spans Kitui and Makueni counties. It is now 90 per cent complete in the first phase.

Ruto said the funds include a KSh9.6 billion loan from the African Development Bank. Completing the dam will provide water for drinking, livestock and irrigation.
