Tesla expands free Giga Train service for Berlin factory workers

Tesla is enhancing its free shuttle train service for Gigafactory Berlin employees starting January 4, with new direct routes from Berlin Ostbahnhof. The update aims to increase rail commuting among the workforce while maintaining the service's no-cost access for all riders. This follows previous expansions of the Giga Train program.

Tesla announced an expansion of its factory shuttle service in Germany, set to begin on January 4. The new routes will provide direct rail connections from Berlin Ostbahnhof East Station, with a stop at Ostkreuz, to Erkner Station at the Gigafactory Berlin-Brandenburg complex in Grünheide. The timetable aligns with employee shift changes, offering six daily trips and ensuring a consistent 35-minute travel time, despite ongoing construction at Fangschleuse and Köpenick stations.

"The service includes six daily trips, which also cover our shift times. The trains will run between Berlin Ostbahnhof (with a stop at Ostkreuz) and Erkner station to the Gigafactory," Tesla Germany stated. The service remains completely free, open to both employees and non-employees, supporting broader mobility in the area.

This initiative builds on earlier phases of the Giga Train program, which first linked Erkner to the factory grounds and later extended to Berlin-Lichtenberg. Gigafactory Berlin began production in March 2022 and now employs around 11,500 workers, with approximately 60% commuting from Berlin. The facility manufactures the Model Y, Tesla's top-selling vehicle, for the German market and beyond.

Tesla's push emphasizes sustainability, targeting over half of its staff to use public transportation instead of cars. By optimizing rail options, the company addresses commuting needs while aligning with its environmental goals at the Grünheide site.
