Texas man accused of holding disabled wife captive for five years

A 46-year-old Texas man faces charges after allegedly confining his disabled wife in a bedroom of their Houston home for five years, providing her minimal food and no phone access. The case came to light when the woman used his phone to call 911, prompting a police response and his arrest. Authorities say he starved her and neglected her medical needs during the ordeal.

James Earl Johnson, 46, was arrested last week in southeast Houston and charged with injury to a disabled individual and abandoning or endangering a disabled individual, according to court records. Prosecutors allege that Johnson locked his 46-year-old wife inside a bedroom of their million-dollar home, where they lived with their children, including a 6-year-old, for five years without phone access.

The victim had little contact with the outside world until March 6, when Johnson accidentally left his phone in the room. She dialed 911, but he returned during the call, struck her, carried her back to the bed, and ended the conversation with the dispatcher, court documents state. Investigators say Johnson provided her with just "1 egg" a day and some dinner, while failing to offer consistent medical care.

Police responded to the home after the call, leading to Johnson's arrest. Medics took the woman to a local hospital, where she remained days later. Her adult son told Houston ABC affiliate KTRK that he declined to discuss her condition or disability details.

The home in the Clear Lake community was appraised at $1,019,237 in 2025 by the Harris Central Appraisal District. Court records note a prior police visit in November, where the victim said she and the children had been instructed not to speak, resulting in no report filed.

Johnson posted $50,000 bond and was released from Harris County Jail. Bond conditions prohibit contact with his wife, firearm possession, and require a GPS monitor. His next court appearance is scheduled for March 18.
