On March 9, 2026, at Stadium 1 during the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, California, Alexandra Eala faced fourth-seeded Coco Gauff in the third round. Eala took control early, leading 5-2 in the first set when Gauff called for a medical timeout for pain in her left forearm. A trainer treated her arm and shoulder, but Eala broke on Gauff's double fault to win the set 6-2. Gauff's forearm was heavily taped during the break, but pain persisted into the second set, where she dropped the first two games. After 54 minutes, Gauff retired, marking only her second career WTA retirement, the first against Marie Bouzkova at the 2022 Cincinnati Open.
Gauff later detailed the injury on Instagram and in a press conference: "I felt a weird pain in my left arm in the second game of the match, I tried to continue but it was only getting more intense. It felt like a firework was going off inside of my arm, and then my whole arm felt like it was on fire." Suspecting a nerve issue, she planned an MRI the next day and hoped to recover for the Miami Open. Approaching the net, she apologized to Eala: "I’m sorry, I hate to do this."
Eala, world No. 32, shared a net embrace with Gauff, who she praised in her on-court interview on International Women's Day: "Among them is Coco, so thank you Coco for being an amazing competitor and an amazing role model. And I really hope that everything is well and you will recover soon." Eala added mixed feelings: "I really didn’t want to win this way, but this is still a really big moment for me." The win improved her top-5 record to 3-3 (including prior victories over Madison Keys and Iga Swiatek) and evened her head-to-head with Gauff at 1-1 after a loss in Dubai last month.
Eala, who received a first-round bye and beat Dayana Yastremska earlier, faces Linda Noskova next on Tuesday for a quarterfinal spot. Noskova had come back from a set down against Sorana Cirstea. Gauff noted Eala's strong play and regretted detracting from her milestone achievement.
