Ethiopia's electric service fulfills 80% of domestic targets

Ethiopia's Electric Power has achieved 80% of its electrification development targets using domestic suppliers. This effort supports the green economy and expands local investment. Anwar Abare, head of communications, shared these details with Fana Digital.

Addis Ababa, February 14, 2026 (FMC) – Ethiopia's Electric Power service has fulfilled 80% of its electric base development targets through domestic suppliers.

Anwar Abare, head of communications for the service, told Fana Digital that priority was given to local companies that maintained quality in submitting various targets. This initiative aims to bolster the green economy initiated by the government and expand domestic investment.

Among the submitted targets, one is the distribution transformer, with 3,944 transformers from local manufacturers joining the service in the past six months alone. Similarly, over 32,000 insulators, over 97,000 transformer protection items, over 32,000 meters of conductor and cables, and over 201,000 various hardware items have been provided domestically.

The service creates the necessary space for local manufacturers to present quality targets by supporting them. Manufacturers commit to presenting protected targets at their level by partnering with the service. A key goal is to respond quickly to customer queries regarding electric services.

To address challenges, efforts focus on supporting local manufacturers and fulfilling needs without relying on imports, as Anwar emphasized.
