Indonesian tennis player Janice Tjen secured an impressive victory in the first round of the 2026 Qatar Total Energies Open in Doha. She defeated Brazil's Beatrice Haddad Maia 6-0, 6-1 on February 9, 2026 local time.
Doha, VIVA – The 23-year-old Indonesian Janice Tjen shone on a wildcard entry at this WTA 1000 event. The match lasted one hour and nine minutes, with Janice losing just one game throughout. She was originally set to face Romania's Sorana Cirstea, but Cirstea withdrew after winning the WTA 250 Transylvania Open on February 7. Haddad Maia stepped in as a lucky loser after exiting qualifiers.
In the first set, Janice dominated with strong serving, logging two aces and converting three of seven break points to win 6-0. In the second set, Haddad Maia fought back with two aces of her own, but Janice stayed disciplined, superior in service and return points, converting two of three break points to close 6-1.
This win advances Janice to the second round, a positive milestone in her WTA 1000 debut. Earlier at the WTA 500 in Abu Dhabi, she beat Australia's rising star Maya Joint in the first round via a third set, but fell to fifth seed Liudmila Samsonova in the second. In doubles, partnering Filipina Alexandra Eala, they reached the semifinals by ousting second seeds Zhang Shuai and Cristina Bucsa, though their run ended in the Mubadala Abu Dhabi Open 2026 semifinals.
