Ministry of education partners with Mombasa county on bursaries and scholarships

The Ministry of Education and Mombasa County Government have formed a partnership to collaborate on issuing bursaries and scholarships in the county. The agreement, signed on January 15, was announced in a gazette notice dated February 6. The initiative aims to promote resource sharing and equitable access to quality education.

The Mombasa County Government, led by Governor Abdulswamad Sheriff, has reached an agreement with the national Ministry of Education to establish a framework for issuing bursaries and scholarships to students in primary, secondary, special education, university, and tertiary institutions. In a gazette notice dated February 6, the governor stated that the deal, signed on January 15, will guide the transfer of certain education functions from the national to the county level, fostering transparency and accountability in managing the county's education sector.

"The objective of this agreement is to: promote sharing of resources in education service delivery; and Enhance and promote equitable access to quality and inclusive education," Abdullswamad said.

A bursary is a non-repayable financial award from institutions or governments to help students cover costs like tuition and living expenses. The agreement can be amended in writing with mutual consent of both parties.

Members of the public can inspect the original agreement at the Ministry of Education headquarters in Jogoo House or from the Mombasa County Secretary. In Kenya, government bursaries are categorized by student needs, such as for vulnerable or low-income households, specific careers, or disabilities.

This marks the third such partnership; the ministry signed similar deals with Kisumu and Marsabit counties in October 2025 under Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba, aiming to expand support for poor and vulnerable learners while establishing mechanisms for information and resource sharing.
