New trailer for Exit 8 horror game film adaptation released

A new trailer has been unveiled for the film adaptation of the cult Japanese horror game The Exit 8, ahead of its international release in April. The adaptation follows the game's premise of a man trapped in an endless subway passageway, searching for anomalies to escape. Directed by Genki Kawamura, the film stars singer and actor Kazunari Ninomiya.

The Exit 8, a 2023 walking simulator inspired by Japanese underground passageways, gained a cult following for its premise of navigating an endless corridor while spotting subtle anomalies to progress. Players must carefully observe their surroundings, as overlooking anything unusual resets their journey, leading to increasingly eerie experiences.

The film adaptation mirrors this concept closely. Its official description states: "A man trapped in an endless sterile subway passageway sets out to find Exit 8. The rules of his quest are simple: do not overlook anything out of the ordinary. If you discover an anomaly, turn back immediately. If you don't, carry on. Then leave from Exit 8. But even a single oversight will send him back to the beginning. Will he ever reach his goal and escape this infinite corridor?"

Kazunari Ninomiya portrays the protagonist, wandering the claustrophobic subway alone—or so it seems. The new extended trailer highlights the nightmarish looping scenario, emphasizing the tension and isolation.

Directed by Genki Kawamura, known for producing the anime film Suzume, directing and writing the 2022 film Hyakka, and producing Ed Sheeran's Pokémon-themed music video for Celestial, the adaptation first premiered in Japan last year. It now heads to international cinemas on April 10, joining a wave of video game-to-film projects.

This release builds on the game's success, bringing its subtle horror to a broader audience through cinematic storytelling.
