Stockholm is set to replace the aging Hovet with a modern hockey arena for Djurgården and AIK. The project, known as Nya Hovet, involves two possible locations and is expected to begin construction between 2029 and 2030.
The new arena will have a capacity of at least 10,000 spectators and serve primarily as a venue for SHL matches while also providing training facilities. Stockholm city will own the arena, with both clubs as tenants rather than owners. Djurgården's VD Matthias Sånemyr said the development means a great deal for the club's elite operations, junior teams and overall competitiveness. He noted that clubs in Switzerland and the NHL are drawing talent away from Sweden, making modern facilities essential. Two options are under consideration. One involves demolishing the current Hovet and rebuilding on the same site. The other places the arena at the former Söderstadion location a few hundred meters away. A temporary move to Avicii Arena may be needed during construction if the first option is chosen. Social Democratic finance councilor Emilia Bjuggren described the existing Hovet as worn out. She said the goal is to start construction during the next mandate period between 2026 and 2030. AIK's VD Stefan Gustavson welcomed the agreement and stressed the need for one of Sweden's best hockey arenas.
