The Brass Band Story book set for July publication

A new book exploring the history and development of the brass band movement, written by Prof Trevor Herbert, is scheduled for release on July 14. Titled 'The Brass Band Story,' it offers insights into the cultural and musical evolution of brass bands in the UK and internationally. Published by Yale University Press, the 352-page hardback is priced at £25.00.

Prof Trevor Herbert, Emeritus Professor of Music at the Open University, has authored 'The Brass Band Story,' a comprehensive analysis aimed at general readers. Herbert, who began his musical journey in the junior band of the colliery where his father worked, has a career spanning professional trombone playing and academia, including a research professorship at the Royal College of Music. He is also known for previous works such as 'The British Brass Band,' 'The Brass Band Movement in the 19th and 20th Centuries,' and 'The Cambridge Encyclopaedia of Brass Instruments.'

The book delves into the early history of brass instruments and their precursors, alongside technological advancements. It covers the Victorian era's surge in contesting, village banding, and the Salvation Army's influence. Later sections examine 20th-century developments, including the shift to low pitch, changes in gender roles, education, musical idioms, and the global spread of the movement.

Accompanied by images, the 352-page volume is dedicated to musicians Ieuan Morgan and John Wallace, friends of the author who have passed away. The publication was highlighted on the latest 4BR Review podcast.

Joanna Godfrey, the book's editor, shared her enthusiasm: "Having grown up in the brass band community, I'm so excited to be part of the team publishing The Brass Band Story. Trevor is a renowned authority on the subject, and his brilliant book will be essential reading for people with a love and respect for brass bands."

Herbert reflected on the project: "I always knew that writing this book would be a pleasure, but I never anticipated how intriguing the brass band story would turn out to be."
