Apple expected to launch iPhone Ultra foldable this fall

Rumors indicate Apple is preparing to release its first foldable iPhone, called the iPhone Ultra, with a launch event set for early September. Production plans call for up to 10 million units amid ongoing supply challenges.

Analyst Mark Gurman reported that the most likely debut date for the iPhone Ultra along with the iPhone 18 Pro models is September 8, with September 9 as a backup. The company typically holds its annual hardware event in the first two weeks of September.

Sales are expected one to two weeks after the announcement, though the device's complexity and a global RAM shortage could delay wider availability until November or December. A limited early shipment may arrive in mid-autumn.

The phone is projected to start at $2,000 or higher. It would feature a 7.8-inch flexible inner display, a 5.5-inch outer screen, and a battery between 5,400 and 5,800 mAh. Apple is testing a new display technology to reduce but not remove the crease.

The design includes a wider chassis than some rivals, Touch ID in the lock button instead of Face ID, and a 3D-printed hinge. Software will include iPad-like multitasking features within a modified version of iOS.

Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo predicts limited availability of Apple's first foldable smartphone shortly after its expected launch late in the third quarter of 2026.
