The Directorate of Criminal Investigations has opened an inquiry into violence during the July 16 Ol Kalou parliamentary by-election. Officials are examining the role of armed and hooded individuals in the unrest. Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen ordered the probe.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations said on July 19 that detectives would use forensic analysis of footage, digital records and witness statements to identify those responsible. The agency will also examine anyone who planned, financed or incited the disorder.
Murkomen stated during a visit to Trans Nzoia County that files had already been opened and that suspects would be summoned. He added that any security officers found to have acted unlawfully would face prosecution.
The by-election was won by Democracy for Citizens Party candidate Sammy Kamau, who received 35,440 votes. United Democratic Alliance candidate Samuel Nyagah finished second with 5,450 votes.
Opposition leaders had accused police and armed men of intimidating voters. One local MP denied claims that his vehicle was used to transport hooded individuals, saying he had been checking on party agents.
