The European Commission has confirmed receipt of Carles Puigdemont's complaint against Spain for failing to apply the TJUE ruling on the Amnesty Law.
A Commission spokesperson stated on July 22, 2026, that complaints are examined and evaluated according to standard procedures. The spokesperson added that there are no further comments at this stage and that up to a year may pass before a decision is taken.
The complaint, filed on July 21 by Puigdemont along with Toni Comín and Lluís Puig, accuses the Spanish Court of Auditors of breaching the July 16 TJUE ruling. The Spanish court had opened a ten-day period for allegations in the 2017 referendum case.
The Commission reiterated that it is up to national courts to apply Court of Justice rulings. It also recalled the prior response from Commissioner Michael McGrath to the same effect.
