McLaren driver Oscar Piastri was unable to start his home Formula 1 race at the Australian Grand Prix after crashing during reconnaissance laps. The incident occurred around 40 minutes before the race, destroying the front end of his car. Piastri attributed the crash to a combination of cold tyres and an unexpected power spike from his engine.
Oscar Piastri's 2026 Formula 1 season began disastrously when he crashed his McLaren MCL40 on the way to the grid at Albert Park. The Australian, who had qualified fifth and was set to share the third row with teammate Lando Norris, left the pits for the customary reconnaissance laps about 40 minutes before the race start. As he exited Turn 4 left-hander and crossed the kerbs, Piastri lost control, spinning into the wall on the drivers' left. The impact caused terminal damage to the right-front wheel and suspension, forcing him to park the car and walk away unharmed but dejected.
The crash silenced the record crowd, including fans at the sold-out Piastri grandstand overlooking the McLaren garage. Speaking afterward, Piastri expressed shock: "I'm just disappointed. A scenario like that just shouldn't happen. So, it's obviously very disappointing." He described the sudden loss of control: "I mean, just shock and surprise, really. I was backwards before I'd even really had a chance to react. It all happened pretty quick."
Piastri explained the cause as a mix of factors, taking partial blame for using the kerb with cold tyres—a move he had made all weekend but did not need to. However, he highlighted an unexpected 100kW power surge from the Mercedes engine: "At the same time, I had about 100kW extra power that I didn't expect, which is not insignificant." He noted the challenge with 2026 regulations: "The difficult part to take is that everything was working normally. It's just a function of how the engines have to work with the rules."
The incident echoed Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli's FP3 crash at Turn 1 over kerbs. McLaren team principal Zak Brown, speaking to Sky Sports F1, saw no immediate data issues: "We've not seen anything on the data so far. He didn't say anything on the radio. So we'll do a post-mortem after the race and see what happened." Brown emphasized focusing on Norris's race, calling it disappointing for Piastri's home event.
Elsewhere, Audi's Nico Hulkenberg was demoted to start from the pitlane after a grid issue. George Russell led the grid on pole for Mercedes, followed by teammate Antonelli and Red Bull's Isack Hadjar.
