Former soldier sentenced to life imprisonment for killing wife and two children

Former Kenya Defence Forces Major Peter Mugure Mwaura has been sentenced to life in prison by the High Court after being convicted of murdering his wife and two children.

Judge Martin Muya described the murders as brutal and premeditated. He noted that Mugure showed no remorse for his actions.

The sentence followed the court's conviction for the killings of Joyce Syombua Maua aged 31, their daughter Shanice Mugure Mwaura aged 10 and son Peter Mwaura Junior aged five. Prosecutors had sought the death penalty but the court imposed life imprisonment.

The case originated in October 2019 when Mugure invited his family to the Kenya Air Force Camp in Nanyuki. Evidence showed he killed them after lunch at Kilimara Springs Hotel and then buried the bodies in Thigithu Laikipia County.
