National Bureau of Investigation Director Melvin Matibag testified on Tuesday about the ongoing probe into Vice President Sara Duterte's threats against President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and relatives.
Matibag told the impeachment court that the NBI has identified persons of interest in the case but has not named any hitman. He said the investigation remains open and ongoing.
Defense lawyers questioned Matibag's personal knowledge of the initial investigation that began after Duterte's November 23, 2024 press conference. They described parts of his testimony as hearsay because he was not involved at that stage.
Lanao del Sur Representative Zia Alonto Adiong said on Tuesday night that people from conflict areas would not wait for threats to become bullets. He stated that the NBI investigation was necessary to prevent instability.
The court also issued subpoenas for Duterte's bank and tax records on Monday. Defense spokesman Michael Poa said Duterte had been informed of the ruling while in The Hague.
