An OCTA Research survey showed that 64 percent of Filipinos distrust China amid tensions in the West Philippine Sea. Trust fell to 14 percent from 17 percent in the first quarter of 2026. The results were released on Wednesday following an incident at Ayungin Shoal.
The July 4 to 11 survey found distrust rose from 55 percent to 64 percent while undecided respondents fell from 28 percent to 21 percent. A majority across geographic areas and socio-economic classes expressed distrust.
OCTA noted the survey coincided with the 10th anniversary of the arbitral ruling. It indicated public opinion remains closely tied to developments in the West Philippine Sea. The firm added that government transparency and responsible media reporting help keep the public informed.
Days before the release, China Coast Guard members assaulted Philippine Navy personnel at Ayungin Shoal. President Marcos met Chinese Ambassador Jing Quan on Tuesday to discuss the incident. The poll reversed a two-year decline in distrust, which had fallen to 55 percent by March 2026.
