The Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships have seen a breakout performance from Alexandra Eala, the 20-year-old Filipina ranked No. 47. In the second round on February 18, 2026, Eala upset sixth seed Jasmine Paolini, the world No. 8 and former champion, 6-1, 7-6(5) in 1 hour and 40 minutes. This marked her third career Top-10 win and first of the year, improving her record against Top-10 players to 3-2, all in straight sets. Her previous victories came against Madison Keys and Iga Swiatek in Miami last year.
Eala dominated the first set but faced a tense second, where Paolini saved three match points at 3-5 and led 6-5. Eala forced a tiebreak, converting her fifth match point with a forehand winner. She won 86% of first-serve points and held a 7-2 edge in winners during key exchanges. Reflecting on the match, Eala said, “All of the emotions are coming because the tension was so high, especially during that second set, so I’m really happy to have gotten through. She’s a great opponent, obviously being Top 10 and a former champion here in Dubai, so to be able to compete at this level with her is a great achievement for me.” She credited the Filipino crowd's support, noting, “In the tie-break, I was trying everything to keep myself in check... this stadium is full of Filipinos, and I thought of how many of them were probably praying for me to win!”
In the third round, Eala ended Cirstea's seven-match win streak with a 7-5, 6-4 victory in 1 hour and 38 minutes. She broke at 5-5 in the first set, converting her third set point, and built a 4-0 lead in the second before holding firm as Cirstea won three straight games. Eala sealed the win with another forehand winner. “Every round is such a battle and so filled with tension,” she said post-match. “The key today was staying calm and trusting my shots.”
This is Eala's second WTA 1000 quarterfinal, following her Miami semifinal last season, and she is the first Filipino to reach Dubai's last eight since 2001. Ahead of her clash with Paolini, the Italian praised Eala's global impact: “I think it’s really important to have people from all around the world playing tennis... Somebody like Alexandra Eala, it’s a huge thing for tennis.” Eala's 2026 season stands at 9-5 after quarterfinals in Manila and Abu Dhabi.
Eala, who partnered with Gauff in doubles at last year's Italian Open, faces the world No. 4 on February 20. Gauff, a two-time Grand Slam champion with 11 WTA titles, recently beat Elise Mertens 2-6, 7-6(9), 6-3. Gauff joked to the crowd, “I know you guys are probably here for Alex so I’m sorry to make you wait.” Eala called Gauff “such an amazing person” and a “great role model.”
