Ben Folds testifies against Trump Kennedy Center changes

Singer Ben Folds appeared before Congress on Tuesday to describe the impact of Donald Trump’s 2025 takeover of the Kennedy Center. He said the move turned the venue into a politicized space and forced his resignation as artistic advisor to the National Symphony Orchestra.

Folds spoke at a congressional forum focused on what organizers called Trump’s “vanity projects.” The hearing was led by Sen. Richard Blumenthal.

He recalled that the Kennedy Center stayed free of political discussion until Trump removed board members and named himself chairman in February 2025. After that change, Folds said artists faced pressure to treat invitations as endorsements or protests.

Folds also described concerns for performer safety and referenced an incident involving singer Yasmin Levy in September. He resigned his post shortly after the board changes.

A federal judge ruled in May that Trump could not add his name to the center’s title. Other witnesses at the forum discussed spending on White House renovations and monuments in Washington.

President Donald Trump has suggested replacing a planned concert for America's 250th anniversary with a rally headlined by himself after multiple musicians canceled their appearances.

Singer Ben Folds addressed a Congressional forum on July 21, 2026, and condemned the changes at the Kennedy Center under President Donald Trump. He described the institution as a hyper-politicised environment and warned that politicising art leads to propaganda.

Ben Folds has written an open letter urging public support for the National Symphony Orchestra amid ongoing financial and operational challenges at the Kennedy Center in Washington DC. The orchestra faces uncertainty following political changes and a recent court ruling on the venue's name.

President Donald Trump suggested turning the upcoming Great American State Fair on the National Mall into a “Make America Great Again” rally after several announced performers withdrew from the event. The fair is scheduled to begin June 25 as part of programming tied to the nation’s 250th anniversary celebrations.

President Donald Trump has announced or begun a wide-ranging set of construction and renovation efforts in Washington, D.C., from resurfacing the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool to pursuing a new White House ballroom and proposed monument projects tied to the nation’s 250th anniversary in July 2026. Several initiatives have prompted lawsuits, procedural disputes and public backlash, even as federal planning bodies continue to review and, in some cases, approve the proposals.
