Cape Town will host the Moja Chess Extravaganza 2026, one of Africa's largest international chess events, from April 25 to 30 at the Bellville Velodrome. The Moja Chess Extravaganza 2026 marks a significant milestone for chess in Africa, shifting the event to Cape Town for the first time. Founded by Moja Chess Solutions, the tournament has grown from its previous edition, which drew nearly 700 participants, to a projected 1,000 players this year. It will feature FIDE-rated sections for elite competitors, as well as dedicated categories for women, juniors, seniors aged 50 and above, and developing players.
New for 2026 are a specific seniors section and special prizes for players with disabilities, underscoring the event's commitment to inclusivity. Live global broadcasts via electronic boards will allow worldwide spectators to follow the games in real time. Dr. Jabulani Mokoena, founder of Moja Chess Solutions, highlighted the importance of the Cape Town venue: “Cape Town provides the perfect international stage for African chess. Our goal is not only to host a tournament, but to build a movement that creates opportunities, inspires young minds, and places Africa firmly on the global chess map.”
