Egypt to import frozen poultry to boost supply ahead of Ramadan

Egypt has agreed to import large quantities of frozen poultry and parts from several countries to increase market supply and lower prices ahead of Ramadan, according to the ministries of Supply and Agriculture and the Mostaqbal Misr Agency for Sustainable Development.

In a move to bolster food security, the Egyptian government has agreed to import large quantities of frozen poultry, including whole birds, thighs, and breasts, from multiple countries. The deal was reached during a Sunday meeting between Supply Minister Sherif Farouk, Agriculture Minister Alaa Farouk, and Bahaa El-Ghanam, head of the Mostaqbal Misr Agency for Sustainable Development.

The three entities described their collaboration as a "food security triangle" aimed at coordinating the availability of essential goods and regulating market dynamics. The first shipments are set to arrive before the start of Ramadan and will be sold at discounted prices through a national network of fixed and mobile outlets affiliated with the organizations across all governorates.

This initiative forms part of broader state efforts to strengthen strategic food reserves, achieve market balance, and ensure price stability during and after the holy month. The parties affirmed ongoing coordination to facilitate swift distribution of the imports, alongside additional steps to expand supplies of basic commodities, thereby enhancing the national food security framework and easing the burden on citizens.

Egypt’s Ministry of Supply and Internal Trade has ordered a significant cut in frozen poultry prices at state-affiliated outlets and “Ahlan Ramadan” exhibitions, bringing them below the current EGP 120 rate, Minister Sherif Farouq announced on Monday. The reduction forms part of wider efforts to secure strategic commodity stocks and offer goods at affordable prices ahead of the holy month of Ramadan.

The Egyptian government has warned poultry producers against monopolistic practices and price-fixing as it seeks to stabilize the domestic market ahead of Ramadan. Alaa Farouk, Minister of Agriculture and Land Reclamation, and Mahmoud Mumtaz, Chairperson of the Egyptian Competition Authority, met with the board of the General Association of Poultry Producers to discuss market regulations and supply chain challenges.

Egypt's Ministry of Agriculture and Land Reclamation issued approximately 1,165 operating licences in December 2025, covering renewals and initial approvals for livestock production, feed manufacturing, poultry activities, and milk collection centres. The announcement came in a report by Tarek Soliman, head of the Livestock and Poultry Development Sector, to Minister Alaa Farouk. These licences aim to support small breeders while adhering to biosecurity standards.
