On Saturday, KwaZulu-Natal experienced two tragic fire incidents that claimed eight lives. The first occurred at Shaka’s Head near Ballito on the north coast, where a fire engulfed an informal settlement shack, killing five children aged between 1 and 19 years old. They were siblings from the same family. Their father, Sivuyile Noyila, expressed devastation over the loss.
SABC News reported on the incident, including coverage by Nonhlakanipho Magwaza, highlighting the family's grief. The parents were hospitalized following the fire.
In the second incident, shortly after midnight in the Nongoloza area under Umdoni local municipality on the south coast, a structural fire resulted in the deaths of three individuals from the Cibane and Dlamini families.
Provincial CoGTA Spokesperson Senzelwe Mzila stated: “From the report received disaster management centre in the area of Nongoloza, under the Umdoni local municipality, a structural fire took place after midnight, where three members of the Cibane and Dlamini families lost their lives.” The MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Reverend Buthelezi, has offered condolences and plans to visit the families to provide interim relief.
These events underscore the vulnerabilities in informal settlements and rural areas to fire hazards, though no causes were specified in reports.
