Graduate student Elena Martinez-Rodriguez claimed victory in the high jump at the NSIC Indoor Track and Field Championships, marking her fifth win in the event this season. The St. Cloud State University athlete also set a personal best in the triple jump while contributing most of her team's points. The Huskies placed 10th overall in the team standings.
The NSIC Indoor Track and Field Championships took place on February 27 and 28 at Myers Field House in Mankato. Elena Martinez-Rodriguez, a graduate student from Madrid, Spain, won the high jump on the first day with a leap of 5 feet, 5-1/4 inches. This victory represented the third consecutive week and fifth time this season that she has topped the high jump competition.
On the second day, Martinez-Rodriguez achieved a personal-best triple jump of 38 feet, 6-3/4 inches, securing fifth place. Her performances accounted for 14 of the St. Cloud State University women's track and field team's total of 18.5 points. The team finished 10th out of 15 competing squads. Minnesota State-Mankato claimed the team title with 216.33 points, extending their streak to six consecutive championships.
Martinez-Rodriguez became the first St. Cloud State athlete to win an event at the indoor conference meet since Natalie Gottschalk's pentathlon victory in 2018. She is the seventh Husky to win an event overall in NSIC indoor history. Her jumps met provisional qualifying standards for the NCAA Division II championships, though she ranked outside the top 18 in both events as of the meet's conclusion.
Other notable results for the Huskies included sophomore Lauren Woelfel tying for fifth in the pole vault with a clearance of 11 feet, 10 inches. The 1,600-meter relay team of junior Jenna Marxhausen, freshman Efe Ottah, freshman Jillian Kneisler, and junior Myesha Thompson recorded a season-best time of 4 minutes, 3.90 seconds to place eighth. Sophomore Abbygail Nunez set a personal best of 1:39.25 in the 600-meter run, finishing 12th.
Freshman Jordyn Tozer competed in her debut pentathlon, placing 15th with 2,365 points and achieving personal bests in the shot put (34 feet, 4-1/4 inches), long jump (15 feet, 7 inches), and 800-meter run (2:55.25). She also finished fifth in the 60-meter hurdles (11.25 seconds) and 15th in the high jump (4 feet, 3-1/4 inches). Sophomore Kinsey Mohwinkle leaped 34 feet, 9 inches in the triple jump for 28th place, while Kneisler ran 1:43.42 in the 600-meter for 22nd. The distance medley relay of Nunez, Ottah, Kneisler, and MerriAnna Johnson placed 12th in 13:06.35.
The indoor season ended for most Huskies, with the outdoor campaign starting March 20 at the Miner Invitational in Rolla, Missouri.
