French publisher Nacon files for insolvency

French video game publisher Nacon has filed for insolvency after failing to meet its debt obligations. The company aims to use the procedure to continue operations and renegotiate with creditors while protecting jobs. This follows the recent release of titles like Styx: Blades of Greed and Hell is Us.

Nacon, a French video game publisher, announced on February 25, 2026, that it does not have sufficient assets to meet its due liabilities, leading it to file for insolvency with the court. The filing comes after its majority shareholder, Bigben Interactive, failed to make a partial repayment of a bond loan, attributed to an 'unexpected and late refusal by its banking pool.' Last week, Nacon had indicated that its situation required rapid financial restructuring with creditors to ensure operational continuity.

The publisher stated that the insolvency procedure will enable it to 'continue its business, renegotiate its debts, and develop a credible and effective continuation plan.' It emphasized assessing all possible solutions to sustain the company's activity under the best conditions, protect employees, and preserve jobs within a 'calm and constructive framework.' The suspension of Nacon's share price, first announced on February 20, remains in effect.

Nacon recently released Styx: Blades of Greed, which received a four-star review from Eurogamer's Jim Sterling, who described it as 'easily the best stealth game in years,' though not as refined as a 'fine piece of quartz.' Last year, it published Hell is Us, a Soulslike game following an AWOL military operative searching for his family in a war-torn country infested with supernatural beings. The title eschewed clear objectives and quest markers, earning fair praise but limited wider attention. Other projects include the troubled RPG sequel Greedfall 2, slated for March, and Terminator: Survivors, which was delayed indefinitely and dropped plans for Early Access and multiplayer co-op. Nacon also handled publishing for RoboCop: Rogue City - Unfinished Business. The company plans to host its next Nacon Connect showcase on March 4.

Ubisoft's recent company-wide reset has led to the cancellation of six games, studio closures, and a proposed 200 voluntary redundancies in France, prompting unions to vote for strikes. The move includes the scrapping of the long-delayed Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time remake and a price increase for the Just Dance+ service. Shares fell 34 percent, marking the company's lowest value in 15 years.

Building on its Game of the Year triumph at The Game Awards 2025, Sandfall Interactive's Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 won a record nine awards out of 12 nominations. The Montpellier studio's debut RPG has sold 5 million copies since April, drawing from Belle Epoque Paris and Japanese RPGs.

In the wake of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33's record-breaking performance at The Game Awards—including Game of the Year—French President Emmanuel Macron congratulated developer Sandfall Interactive on Instagram, calling it a 'historic first for a French title.' The gesture underscores national pride in the Montpellier studio's debut success.

Ubisoft has revealed plans to cut 55 jobs at its Massive Entertainment and Ubisoft Stockholm studios as part of ongoing restructuring efforts. The move follows a voluntary leave program launched in fall 2025 and aims to align staffing with long-term project needs. Despite the cuts, development on key titles like The Division 3 continues uninterrupted.

Chris Stockman, design director for the original Saints Row, has declared the franchise dead following a lack of response from Embracer Group. Last November, Embracer approached him about a potential prequel idea, but months later, he reports being ignored. This comes after the 2022 reboot's failure and Volition's closure in 2023.
