Mewgenics recoups budget in three hours after Steam launch

Mewgenics, a new tactical roguelike from developers Edmund McMillen and Tyler Glaiel, has become a breakout hit on Steam. The game sold over 150,000 copies within its first six hours and recouped its entire development budget in just three hours. It reached a peak of nearly 66,000 concurrent players and topped Steam's best-seller list.

Mewgenics launched on Steam on February 10, 2026. Within five hours, it sold 152,000 copies, surpassing the 40,000 copies sold by The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth on its release day in 2014, according to developer Edmund McMillen. "Isn't that kind of insane?" McMillen remarked. By six hours, sales exceeded 150,000 copies, and the game had already recovered its full development costs.

Co-developer Tyler Glaiel shared the news on social media: "And we have made back our development budget after 3 hours. Thank you all :)" He also told IGN that Mewgenics outperformed any expansions for The Binding of Isaac, the duo's previous indie success that sold over 700,000 copies in less than a year after its 2011 launch.

The game quickly climbed to the top of Steam's Top Sellers list, surpassing Overwatch's recent relaunch, which itself achieved new player peaks. Mewgenics peaked at 65,962 concurrent players. Described as a cat-focused tactical roguelike, it received positive previews; Eurogamer's Christian Donlan noted: "The core of Mewgenics may be simple and familiar, but the game that unfolds across all these runs is huge."

Development on Mewgenics began over seven years ago, evolving from an earlier concept incubated more than 12 years prior. McMillen, known for Super Meat Boy and The Binding of Isaac, expressed nervousness about the release despite his track record. To mark the launch, the developers celebrated with a custom vanilla cake featuring chocolate bits.
