Directed by Thomas Tancred and executive produced by Chapman Way and Maclain Way, 'Untold: Chess Mates' examines the 2022 Sinquefield Cup in St. Louis, where Niemann defeated Carlsen in the third round, ending the Norwegian's 53-game unbeaten streak. Carlsen withdrew from the tournament shortly after, later implying suspicions of cheating, which ignited global headlines.
The scandal escalated when Carlsen resigned after one move in their subsequent online match. Niemann admitted to past online cheating but denied any over-the-board misconduct. A Chess.com report indicated Niemann likely cheated in more than 100 online games, though it found no evidence for in-person play against Carlsen.
