Olamilekan’s bloom & essence exhibition honors african womanhood

Emerging Nigerian artist Okunade Olamilekan has launched his debut solo exhibition, Bloom & Essence, at The British Council in Lagos. The show pays tribute to the resilience and dignity of African women, drawing from his personal experiences. Curated by Paul Ayihawu, it features portraits blending cultural heritage with modern artistry.

Okunade Olamilekan, born in Lagos in 1988 and now based in Oyo State, opened his first solo exhibition, Bloom & Essence, at The British Council in Lagos. Themed around the strength, sacrifices, and evolving identity of African women, the show portrays them as queens, mothers, muses, and anchors of generational continuity. Olamilekan, raised by a single mother, described his work during the exhibition as "an ongoing tribute to the strength and sacrifices that shaped his upbringing."

Curated by Paul Ayihawu, the exhibition merges African heritage with classical artistic elegance. Ayihawu stated, “the exhibition is an epistle of Black power, a reminder of the dignity and grace that continue to define the African woman. The works merge African heritage with classical artistic elegance, inviting viewers to engage with themes of identity, self-determination, and cultural preservation.” Portraits feature subjects in elaborate hairstyles, Victorian-influenced garments, and shimmering pixel formations that evoke cultural memory and futuristic elements.

A standout piece is the two-part painting, The One Who Paints Her Future I & II. Art historian Ayodeji Akinyemi noted it as "a powerful commentary on education and aspiration in the lives of young African women." The use of mirrors in the work encourages reflection on personal dreams and societal expectations.

Olamilekan employs a pixel-like acrylic technique, bold color grids, and portraits that shift between abstraction and realism. Beyond the exhibition, he runs a residential atelier mentoring emerging artists and is a member of Global Arts in Medicine, emphasizing art's role in community transformation.

As part of the British Council’s Creative Showcase Programme, which supports local creatives with resources and international visibility, Bloom & Essence positions Olamilekan among Nigerian artists redefining African portraiture. The exhibition is currently open to the public at The British Council, Lagos.
