Deputies from Republicanos and the Partido Nacional Libertario filed a constitutional accusation on Monday against former Finance Minister Nicolás Grau over irregularities in fiscal projections.
The nearly 60-page document divided into four chapters was filed Monday in the Chamber of Deputies with signatures from lawmakers of Republicanos, PNL, RN, PDG and the Partido Social Cristiano. The accusation charges Grau with violations of the principle of probity, the duty of financial coordination of the State and the structural balance target, among other faults linked to an alleged US$10.5 billion inconsistency in projected public debt. Lawyer Patricio Zapata, who took on the former minister’s defense, said the text does not prove constitutional violations and warned that this institutional tool has been abused. Ruling-party deputies reacted by calling the document a “bodrio” that harms Chile’s credibility and diverts attention from other issues.
