Matteo Brunelli at Collège de France and colleagues developed a mathematical model that replicates the key elements of a traditional grandfather clock with quantum components. Their design features a cavity formed by two facing mirrors, one of which oscillates, along with an atom that transitions between energy states and emits photons to drive the motion. The atom serves as the escapement mechanism, ensuring stable ticks without external control.
