Salary increase for Kenyan civil servants postponed to August 1

The Kenyan government has delayed a planned salary increase for all civil servants from July 1 to August 1. Cabinet Secretary Geoffrey Ruku made the announcement during a public function in Londiani, Kericho County.

Cabinet Secretary Geoffrey Ruku confirmed the change on July 15 while speaking in Londiani. The pay rise, directed by President William Ruto, will now take effect on August 1 and cover basic salaries along with housing and commuter allowances.

Ruku stated that the adjustment applies to more than one million public servants. This includes staff from the Teachers Service Commission, county governments, and state corporations. The measure was first announced in January and backdated to July 2025.

The Cabinet Secretary also directed all government institutions to migrate their payroll systems to the Human Resource Information System immediately. Failure to comply could result in non-payment of salaries. The move aims to eliminate ghost workers from public payrolls.
