Sheinbaum reveals past jobs and her future ISSSTE pension

President Claudia Sheinbaum shared details of her jobs before entering politics during the presentation of the 'Pensiones sin privilegios' reform on February 18. She stated she will retire with an ISSSTE pension of up to 30,000 pesos monthly, which she described as 'very dignified'. These remarks come amid an initiative to cap pensions in public entities.

President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo revealed her pre-political work history during the February 18 morning conference, while presenting the 'Pensiones sin privilegios' reform. This initiative aims to set limits on retirements and pensions from public entities in Mexico, contrasting with millionaire pensions of former Pemex and CFE executives ranging from 300,000 to one million pesos monthly.

Sheinbaum recounted that about 40 years ago, after graduating from the Colegio de Ciencias y Humanidades (CCH) Sur of the UNAM, she studied at the UNAM's Faculty of Sciences and was part of the university's rowing team. While studying, she worked handing out flyers at a traffic light to promote a restaurant, as a receptionist in a medical clinic for three years, and assisting in creating content for Matemática Educativa at the Instituto Politécnico Nacional (IPN). Later, around 1984-1985, she was a professor's assistant at the UNAM Faculty of Sciences.

Regarding her academic background, she attended primary school at the private Manuel Bartolomé Cossío in Tlalpan, high school at CCH Sur, a bachelor's in Physics at UNAM, and a master's and doctorate in Energy Engineering, with a thesis titled 'Economía del Uso Eficiente de la Energía Eléctrica'.

On her future pension, Sheinbaum stated: 'If I count the seniority, well, I will retire with my ISSSTE retirement, which will probably reach, I don't know, maximum 30,000 pesos monthly, which, compared to what many Mexicans earn, is a very dignified pension'.

Her entry into politics was in 2000, when Andrés Manuel López Obrador appointed her as Secretary of Environment for the Federal District following a recommendation from José Barberán. Their first meeting was at Sanborns in San Ángel. Later, she served as head of the Tlalpan delegation, head of Government of CDMX, and in 2024, she won the presidential elections against Xóchitl Gálvez and Jorge Álvarez Maynez, taking office until 2030.
