Team GB's mixed doubles curling duo, childhood friends Bruce Mouat and Jen Dodds, delivered statement performances on Saturday at the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan-Cortina, Italy, to lock in a semi-final berth early.
In their first match, the British pair overcame Canada, who had only lost once prior to this game—to the US. Canada conceded three points in the opening end and trailed 5-2 at the halfway break. Despite a rare error by Dodds that prevented an earlier concession after seven ends, she redeemed herself to seal a 7-5 victory.
Hours later, Mouat and Dodds faced the unbeaten US team of Korey Dropkin and Cory Thiesse. The Americans trailed by three after two ends and at the interval, but mounted a comeback by stealing three points in the fifth end to level the score amid cheers from the crowd. Britain responded by nudging ahead, then stealing one in the seventh to lead by two. Although the US retained the hammer, a Dropkin error in the final end allowed Dodds to clinch a clinical 6-4 win.
"We're coming here to try to get a medal. We've been after it for four years at least now," said Mouat, reflecting on their 2022 bronze medal match loss. He added, "I feel like a hot mess at the minute, but the energy levels are good. I'm playing the sport I love at the Olympics, so I don't need any more adrenaline or caffeine."
Dodds echoed the focus forward: "We had a really clinical last end. I don't actually know who we're playing first tomorrow—that's how far ahead I look—but we just need to keep doing what we're doing."
The pair's momentum has halted the progress of two curling heavyweights, setting up Sunday's matches against Switzerland at 13:35 GMT and hosts Italy at 18:05 GMT, both live on BBC.
