Former world number two Wesley So has announced his participation in the Norway Chess tournament for the sixth time in 2026. The Filipino-born American grandmaster expressed enthusiasm for the event, set to take place in Oslo from May 25 to June 5. Organizers highlighted his consistent excellence in the sport.
Wesley So, a prominent figure in international chess for over a decade, confirmed his return to the Norway Chess tournament on February 18, 2026. In a statement, So said, "I am delighted to be coming back to play Norway Chess. And what a pleasure to be visiting in brilliant sunshine! Toasting to a fun and challenging event! Skål!" This marks his sixth appearance at the prestigious event.
So, who achieved the grandmaster title at age 14, has a distinguished career. He formerly ranked as world number two and surpassed the 2800 Elo rating mark at his peak. Between 2016 and 2017, he maintained an unbeaten streak of 67 games in classical chess. His accomplishments include the 2019 FIDE World Fischer Random Championship, three U.S. national titles, an Olympiad gold medal with the United States team, and victories in multiple elite tournaments. Known for his precision, control, and deep preparation, So remains competitive against top opposition.
Benedicte Westre Skog, chief operating officer of Norway Chess, welcomed So's return, stating, "Wesley has been among the world’s very best for so long, and that kind of consistency is rare. He brings calmness, depth, and real fighting strength to every game. When he plays, you know the quality will be high."
Norway Chess is a leading tournament that gathers top male and female players in a six-player double round-robin format. Since 2024, it has included the Norway Chess Women event with equal prize funds, promoting gender equality in chess. The 2026 edition will occur at Deichman Bjørvika in Oslo from May 25 to June 5.
