The International Chess Federation's Chess in Education Commission has launched the 2026 FIDE EDU Classroom Contest to spotlight schools using chess for student development. Participants can submit photos of their chess classrooms for prizes that include promotions and educational resources. The initiative aims to showcase global chess education efforts ahead of the designated Year of Chess in Education.
In recognition of 2026 as the Year of Chess in Education, the FIDE Chess in Education Commission (EDU) has introduced a contest inviting schools worldwide to share images of their chess classrooms. These spaces serve as centers for personal growth and social development, where students engage in play, learning, and relationship-building.
Schools and chess clubs of any size are encouraged to participate, from large institutions to small grassroots programs. Entries consist of up to three photos per school, each under 500kB, depicting classroom activities that highlight engagement, creativity, and chess's role in education and community. Submissions must include the school's name, city, country, and the contact details of the chess teacher, coach, or coordinator. Photos should be sent to abel@riseforthekids.org.
Judging criteria focus on the vibrancy of classroom interactions, innovative activities, effective integration of chess as a teaching tool, and its capacity to unite participants. As the announcement states, the contest seeks classrooms that "speak for themselves in showing the power of chess to transform lives."
Prizes emphasize promotion and professional development. The first-place winner receives a FIDE social media feature, a free application to the FIDE School Award, a complimentary Preparation of Teacher’s course entry, and a full annual LogiqBoard subscription. Second place offers similar promotion and a free School Award entry, but with 50% discounts on the course and subscription. Third place includes promotion and 50% off the School Award application, alongside 25% reductions on the course and LogiqBoard.
The submission deadline is April 30, 2026, with winners announced on May 8, 2026. This contest builds on FIDE's broader efforts in chess education, including courses, surveys, and partnerships like the recent MoU with AICF and KIIT University.
