Fire in Iggesund forces rescue service to retreat

A major fire has broken out in a multi-family house in Iggesund, Hudiksvall municipality. The rescue service was forced to retreat due to the intense heat and flames. Two people have been taken to hospital with unclear injury status.

On the evening of Tuesday, February 17, 2026, the rescue service was alerted to a multi-family house in Iggesund, Hudiksvall municipality, just before 8 p.m. The fire quickly developed into a fully involved blaze with flames bursting from the building. Several rescue units responded to combat the fire but were forced to retreat from inside the house due to the high risk.

“We had to retreat,” says Andreas Wikström of the rescue service. “We have decided to let it burn down under controlled conditions.”

The rescue service entered to check if anyone was inside the building but could not confirm that everyone was out. Residents were evacuated from their apartments. There is no risk of spread to nearby buildings, according to Wikström.

At least two people were taken to hospital by ambulance, but the extent of their injuries is unknown. Police are on site to assist and have initiated a preliminary investigation into arson, as they cannot contact one person.

“We can't get in touch with one person, so a preliminary investigation into arson has been initiated,” says Mikael Pettersson, the police site commander.

The cause of the fire remains unknown. Railway traffic nearby is operating at reduced speed, leading to delays for trains. The rescue service estimates the operation will continue for much of the night. Hudiksvall municipality is collaborating with the rescue service and police to reach affected individuals.
