Jérôme Barella charged with murder and rape of Lyhanna

The main suspect in the Lyhanna case was charged on Tuesday with rape and murder of the 11-year-old schoolgirl.

Jérôme Barella, 41, was charged on Tuesday with the rape and murder of Lyhanna. He had previously been pursued only for abduction and sequestration of a minor. The suspect now faces life imprisonment.

Barella was arrested the day after the girl's disappearance on 29 May in Fleurance in the Gers. Her body was found on 4 June in a silo in Puycasquier.

On 24 June, after the autopsy conclusions revealing rape and injuries, the Agen prosecutor had broadened the charges. Objects were seized during a search on 6 July at his home in Montestruc-sur-Gers.

The murder of 11-year-old Lyhanna, whose body was found last Thursday in the Gers, has highlighted a rape complaint filed in August 2025 against main suspect Jérôme B. The complaint had not led to an arrest.

Autopsy results for 11-year-old Lyhanna, found dead on June 4 in the Gers, were released on Thursday, June 18. They confirm the schoolgirl was raped before being killed.

Jérôme B., charged with abducting the 11-year-old schoolgirl in the Gers, was the subject of an August 2025 complaint for raping a 10-year-old girl.

Invited on RTL Wednesday, Justice Minister Gerald Darmanin announced he will skip summer vacation to reform justice methods, following failures exposed by Lyhanna's death.
