President Lee Jae Myung on Friday reiterated his plan to designate Dec. 3 as a Day of People's Sovereignty marking the anniversary of former President Yoon Suk Yeol's failed martial law imposition.
In a Facebook post marking the 78th Constitution Day, President Lee Jae Myung pledged to designate Dec. 3 as a legal public holiday so that the spirit of the day could be passed down to future generations.
Lee said the martial law declared on Dec. 3, 2024, reminded everyone that the threat to democracy is a reality that could happen again. He added that South Korea had shown the world through a revolution of light that popular sovereignty remains alive.
Lee highlighted the Presidential Committee of Light, launched earlier this week with no more than 35 members including experts in constitutional law. The committee will promote Korean-style participatory democracy and issue certificates to those who protected democracy during the martial law imposition.
