Mato Grosso secretary leaves legislative session citing heart attack risk

Marcelo de Oliveira, Mato Grosso infrastructure and logistics secretary, walked out of a public hearing at the state legislature on Monday after saying he was nervous and could have a heart attack.

Summoned to explain progress on the BRT works between Avenida do CPA in Cuiabá and Aeroporto Internacional Marechal Rondon in Várzea Grande, Oliveira said the first contracted company failed to meet obligations under the contract that began in January 2024. The government rescinded the agreement, applied sanctions and restructured the execution model. He also attributed part of the delays to the previous Várzea Grande administration.

Deputy secretary Isaac Nascimento Filho took over the presentation and reported that the first and longest lot of the project is scheduled for completion by November 2026. The second lot, covering air-conditioned boarding and disembarking stations, is due by December. The third lot remains in the executive project phase.

Regarding the Avenida Fernando Corrêa da Costa corridor, Nascimento Filho said the bidding process has not yet been launched and works are expected to start only in 2027.
