Fiber supplement eases knee osteoarthritis pain in trial

A daily prebiotic fiber supplement reduced knee pain and improved grip strength for people with osteoarthritis in a six-week clinical trial. The study, led by the University of Nottingham, also found lower dropout rates compared to a physiotherapy program.

Researchers tested inulin, a fiber found in chicory root and other vegetables, on 117 adults with knee osteoarthritis. Participants were split into groups receiving inulin, digital physiotherapy, both, or a placebo.

Inulin alone reduced pain, boosted grip strength, and lowered pain sensitivity. It also showed a 3.6 percent dropout rate, far below the 21 percent seen in the physiotherapy group.

Dr. Afroditi Kouraki, lead author, said the findings suggest a simple dietary change could help manage the condition. Senior author Professor Ana Valdes noted a possible gut-muscle-pain link that merits more study.

The results were published in the journal Nutrients.

In a randomized, sham-controlled trial, adults with mild-to-moderate medial compartment knee osteoarthritis who were retrained to walk with a personalized, small change in foot progression angle reported greater pain improvement after one year than those given sham retraining. The study, conducted at Stanford University and published in The Lancet Rheumatology, also found a smaller MRI-based worsening of a cartilage microstructure measure in the intervention group.

A major review of 217 clinical trials has identified aerobic exercises like walking, cycling and swimming as the most effective for reducing pain and improving function in knee osteoarthritis. The study, published in The BMJ, recommends these activities as the first-line intervention. Other exercises provide benefits but work best alongside aerobics.

A minimally invasive procedure known as genicular artery embolization (GAE) was linked to sustained pain reduction and improved function for most people with osteoarthritis-related knee pain in a prospective, single-center study using rapidly resorbable gelatin-based microspheres, with follow-up reported out to 12 months.

A specially formulated tomato-soy juice lowered several markers of inflammation in adults with obesity after four weeks of daily consumption. The beverage, rich in lycopene and soy isoflavones, outperformed a control tomato juice in a small clinical trial led by researchers at The Ohio State University.

A small randomized, double-blind pilot trial in India found that seniors receiving standard antidepressant care reported slightly greater improvements in depression and anxiety symptoms when a daily probiotic was added for 12 weeks, compared with a placebo.
