The iconic Frank and Lupe's Mexican restaurant, a staple in Old Town Scottsdale for over 30 years, closed in September 2025 but is set to return under new ownership. Piero Aviles will lead the reopening in Gainey Ranch, preserving the original recipes and traditions of founders Frank and Maria “Lupe” Bernal. The new location is expected to open in spring 2026.
Frank and Lupe's, a family-owned Mexican restaurant, operated as a beloved destination in Old Town Scottsdale for more than three decades before shutting its doors in September 2025. The establishment, founded by Frank and Maria “Lupe” Bernal, built a loyal following with its authentic dishes and welcoming atmosphere.
Now, under new owner Piero Aviles, the restaurant is preparing to reopen at Gainey Ranch in Scottsdale. Aviles has emphasized continuity with the original vision. “Frank & Lupe’s has always been about heart, hospitality and honest food,” he stated in a news release. “We’re not changing what works. Lupe’s recipes, her traditions and her standards are still at the center of everything we do.”
The menu will stay largely unchanged, featuring signature items such as Teddy's carne asada burrito 505 style, pork carne adobada, and housemade smooth poblano salsa. The new space at 8787 N. Scottsdale Road, Suite 214, will introduce a refreshed Southwest-inspired design, including a bar for eight to 10 guests and intimate dining tables.
“Our goal is to feel familiar, but fresh,” Aviles added. “The Bernals built something truly special. We’re just making sure Lupe’s recipes, her touch and that sense of home live on in this next chapter.”
This revival aims to honor the restaurant's legacy while adapting to its new setting in the Valley. More details are available at frankandlupesaz.com.
