French deputies approve life sentences for serial rapes of minors under 15

On Tuesday, the National Assembly passed life imprisonment for perpetrators of serial rapes on minors under 15 by 258 votes to 84.

The measure, backed by the government following the Lyhanna case, forms part of a broader bill on child protection. That bill was later adopted by 378 votes to 7.

Debates featured sharp exchanges between groups. The left denounced a repressive provision and called for more resources for investigations, while the right and Rassemblement National defended the need for severe sanctions.

Incidents marked the session, including interpellations and calls to order by President Yaël Braun-Pivet. Rassemblement National deputies notably called a socialist lawmaker a «collabo».
