Loveski Deli opens in downtown San Francisco

Loveski Deli, a bagel shop created by Napa-based Michelin three-star chef Christopher Kostow, opened on Wednesday in San Francisco's Jackson Square. The new location marks the brand's first expansion into the city and doubles as a coffee shop. It took over the former Postscript Cafe space, retaining much of the original staff.

The opening of Loveski Deli at 499 Jackson Street in Jackson Square came swiftly after its announcement in late January. This is the third outpost for the four-year-old operation, following the original in Napa's Oxbow Public Market in 2022 and a second in Larkspur's Marin Country Mart in fall 2023.

Chef Christopher Kostow told the San Francisco Chronicle that he hopes visitors will view Loveski as "a lot more than a bagel shop" and not just an average "Jew-ish" deli. The Jackson Square neighborhood, known for its blend of tech startups, creatives, financial firms, venture capitalists, and antique book shops, influenced the location's adaptability to local demands.

Loveski specializes in Montreal-style bagels boiled in honey, available in eight flavors: gluten-free seeded everything, Jacobson salt, poppy seed, sesame seed, cinnamon-raisin, and the "famous yeast" bagel. Sandwiches include Japanese-style egg salad on milk bread, pastrami on soft rye, a Reuben and tuna melt on griddled rye, and braised brisket on a crunchy roll. The San Francisco menu emphasizes grab-and-go options like the egg salad sandwich, turkey and cheddar, and a vegetarian chickpea salad sandwich.

Unique cream cheese spreads feature miso-vegetable, yellow chive and fermented onion, and a vegan option. Additional items include roasted salmon and chicken teriyaki bowls, a chicken Caesar wrap, and a breakfast burrito with pastrami, smashed latke, and green onion. There is no confirmation yet on whether the Napa location's after-4 p.m. Thai fried chicken will be available here.

The deli operates daily from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
