Mayors from several major cities expressed support for security proposals announced by president-elect Abelardo De La Espriella during the presidential transition.
The mayors highlighted the need for greater coordination between the national government and local administrations to combat crimes such as extortion and homicide. Bogotá's Carlos Fernando Galán said the country needs to redefine its criminal policy and punish those who commit violent crimes.
Medellín's Federico Gutiérrez and Cali's Alejandro Eder also voiced support for creating special urban security blocks. Eder welcomed the decision to establish coordination and concrete actions to protect citizens.
Pitalito mayor Yider Luna Joven stressed that without security there is no tourism or investment. He called for a comprehensive justice reform and strengthening of public forces with more personnel and technology.
