RetroDECK, a popular emulation platform for Linux and Steam Deck, will eliminate support for Nintendo Switch emulation in response to DMCA strikes. The developers cite legal risks and high volumes of warnings as key reasons for the decision. This change aims to protect the volunteer-driven project from potential takedowns and threats.
RetroDECK serves as an all-in-one platform that bundles various emulators and tools for Linux systems, with a particular emphasis on the Steam Deck handheld device. The Steam Deck operates on SteamOS, Valve's custom Linux-based operating system, which is also set to appear on upcoming devices like the Steam Machine and Steam Frame.
The decision to drop Nintendo Switch emulation stems from ongoing issues related to DMCA notices. According to the RetroDECK team, "Switch emulation has consistently been the source of the most issues within the project, generating the highest volume of warnings, bans, toxicity, and support tickets." They further explained, "We would also like to note that the DMCA status of these emulators creates a level of legal exposure and implied responsibility that we are neither willing nor able to assume."
As a volunteer-driven initiative, the project prioritizes avoiding legal entanglements. "RetroDECK is a volunteer-driven project, and we will not place the team or the broader community at risk by maintaining features that could subject us to takedowns, legal threats, or compliance burdens beyond our scope," the developers stated. Consequently, all Switch emulation support will be permanently removed in an upcoming minor update.
Previously, RetroDECK integrated Switch emulation mainly through the Ryujinx emulator, with the addition of the Ryubing fork in version 0.10.0b, released on January 18. The latest version, v0.10.3b from early February, still includes this functionality, but it will be excised soon. Users seeking Nintendo Switch emulation on their devices can pursue other options, though not natively via RetroDECK. The platform will maintain support for emulators like Dolphin, PCSX2, and PPSSPP.
