President Claudia Sheinbaum criticized proposals on Monday to condition voting rights through an exam or household voting. The ideas were raised by lawyer Natalia Torres and a PAN militant.
During her morning press conference on July 20, Sheinbaum described the proposals as absurd, regressive, Porfirist and antidemocratic. She recalled women's historic struggle for suffrage and questioned whether backers seek a return to the Porfiriato era.
Lawyer Natalia Torres proposed on the podcast Leo y Nacho that only those passing a state knowledge exam could obtain an INE voter credential. She argued votes from those with advanced degrees should not equal those from people who just turned 18.
PAN militant Javier Albarrán defended household voting on social media. He said a family representative would decide while considering a wife, children and collective needs.
Sheinbaum replied that such ideas show hatred of the people and aim for elite rule. She denied that restricting votes occurs in the name of freedom.
